Quantum Computing (QC) represents a fundamentally new approach to computation and data processing, based on the principles of quantum mechanics, which will allow us to tackle and solve classes of problems even beyond the capabilities of the most powerful supercomputers.
QC indeed revolutionizes classical computing by replacing the basic logical unit of the computer, the bit, with a new basic logical unit, the qubit, capable of exhibiting quantum behaviors.
Thanks to substantial investments, both public and private, in recent years, we have witnessed great strides in QC, not only in terms of hardware and software but also from an algorithmic perspective. Some of the main areas that will benefit first from the use of a quantum computer will be:

Gabriella Bettonte earned a Ph.D. in Mathematical Computer Science from the University Paris-Saclay (2023), specializing in Real-Time applications, operations research, and quantum computing. During her Ph.D., she conducted research in Paris at CEA (Commissariat à l’énergie atomique) in the Technological Research Division. She currently works as an HPC (High-Performance Computing) and QC (Quantum Computing) specialist at the CINECA computing center.

HPC and QC Specialist. Graduated in mathematics for applications, initially specialized in Machine Learning and later in Quantum and High-Performance Computing (QC and HPC). A member of the Quantum Computing Lab at Cineca, she is involved in industrial projects and research support, integration, training, and support in the HPC-QC field.

Mathematician, with a degree in Mathematics for Applications, a Master’s Degree in Scientific Computing (HPC software development), and a Ph.D. in Mathematics and Models. A mathematician with a passion for HPC. My work mainly involves developing PoCs (mathematical problem formulation and software development to demonstrate its solvability) and, if feasible, contributing to their transformation into production software. Since March 2018, I have been working in the field of quantum computing. Initially a marginal part of my work, it gradually became my main role. Since 2020, I have been the coordinator of the Quantum Computing Lab at CINECA.
