To explore these topics in greater depth, on December 2 EuroCC Italy hosted a dedicated webinar on HPC, with a specific focus on the next steps required to build a structured and effective education and training ecosystem in this strategically important field.
The Big Ideas for HPC Education: EuroCC Italy’s webinar
The webinar, featuring contributions from Eleonora Barelli (Head of Education and Foresight at Fondazione IFAB) and Michael Lodi (Junior Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna), provided a valuable opportunity for discussion and in-depth analysis. During the event, the speakers presented the findings of the study “Big Ideas for HPC Education: from current training needs in High-Performance Computing to recommendations for instructional design”, conducted by the ICSC Observatory.
The research offered a comprehensive overview of the current state of HPC education and its future prospects, highlighting a critical gap between the growing demand for professionals with HPC skills and an educational offering that is still insufficient. Particular emphasis was placed on the ten foundational “Big Ideas” of HPC, conceived as guiding principles to support curriculum design, inform pedagogical approaches, and promote the adoption of best practices aimed at innovating educational and professional pathways in the sector.
